Donyo Sabuk Lodge, No. 4070 of the District Grand Lodge of East Africa, celebrated their centenary with a splash-out event on Saturday, the 5th of February 2022. The roaring 20’s themed evening was held at the Freemason’s Hall Ruiru, , Kiambu County, Kenya.
As a sign of the times, the celebration was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings. By comparison, one hundred years before, humanity was reeling from a different global crisis, the first World War, as new countries and geographic boundaries were being drawn up across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. One of the oldest lodges in East Africa, Donyo Sabuk was warranted on 14th January and consecrated 19th of March, 1921. The first lodge meeting was attended by 6 men that would lead the way for rapid growth throughout the next few decades.
To mark this once in a lifetime occasion, members tiled for a moment of reflection and thanks before breaking for a tree-planting ceremony led by our eldest active Brethren; Deputy District Grand Master, V.W. Bro. Kenneth Taylor, and W.Bro. Neil Cohen, who flew in from the UK to mark our celebration. In honor of the occasion, a special Centenary Ale was produced and enjoyed by all Brethren and friends. Described as "brew with a bold but understated image reflecting our Lodge and Masonic values”
As guests arrived, they were welcomed with a cocktail and offered a tour through the history of Donyo Sabuk and FreeMasonry in East Africa where, Brethren, family, and friends walked through the newly renovated lodge just north of Nairobi.

Donyo Sabuk (Kilima Mbogo) meaning “mountain of the buffalo” in Masai, is the Lodge with the oldest standing temple in the District of East Africa which is still in use, a fact worthy of celebration in itself. Spread out among the aging Jacaranda trees, our celebration began with a four-course meal bookmarked by thoughtful words from the oldest and the youngest brethren, special guests from around the Masonic community in East Africa, as well as our sitting Worshipful Master.
Recognizing Brethren both from the past and present, the ceremony paid tribute to 199 joining members, 275 initiations, 1,064 meetings, and 89 different worshipful masters. When asked what this means to him, brother Kenneth Taylor summed up the Masonic spirit nicely, “Beyond the ceremony and the regalia, our brotherhood seeks to help each of us become the best human we can be. This evening recognizes our lasting commitment to that end, with humility and a forward-looking view.”

As the day passed to evening, a ceremonial cake was cut by the W.M. and the I.P.M as significant others were toasted for their continuous support of the brotherhood. Just after sunset, a six-piece band took to the stage and the real revelry ensued. By all accounts, the evening was a fitting toast to the last centenary with an eye towards the next 100 years.
